English Name: Yerba Mate Green Tea

French Name: Thé Vert de Yerba Maté

Also Known As: Ilex Mate Tea, Mate Tea, South American Mate Tea, Yerba Mate Herbal Tea

Part Used: Leaves of Ilex paraguariensis

Description: Yerba Mate Green Tea is a loose-leaf herbal infusion made from the dried leaves of Ilex paraguariensis, a perennial evergreen tree native to subtropical regions of South America, including Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. The tree typically grows 4 to 8 meters in height with glossy, elliptical green leaves that are harvested for tea production. Yerba Mate is a perennial plant that produces new leaves year-round, with harvesting usually occurring during the warm months when leaves are mature and aromatic. The leaves are carefully selected for uniform size, color, and flavor before processing, ensuring a consistent and high-quality herbal infusion.

After harvesting, the leaves are gently dried and lightly cut or shredded to prepare them for brewing while retaining their natural green color, aroma, and flavor. Minimal processing preserves the fresh, grassy, and slightly herbaceous characteristics of the leaves. When brewed, Yerba Mate Green Tea produces a pale to medium green infusion with a fresh, grassy aroma and a smooth, slightly vegetal and naturally aromatic flavor. The tea is naturally vibrant, refreshing, and well-suited for daily consumption.

Uses: Yerba Mate Green Tea can be enjoyed hot or cold. For hot tea, add one teaspoon of dried leaves to a cup of hot water and steep for 3 to 5 minutes, adjusting steeping time according to taste. For iced tea, brew a stronger infusion, allow it to cool, and serve over ice. Yerba Mate leaves can also be cold-brewed in the refrigerator for several hours, producing a smooth, refreshing, and lightly aromatic beverage.

Yerba Mate Green Tea pairs well with complementary herbs and flavors such as mint, lemon peel, lemongrass, or hibiscus, which enhance aroma and balance the fresh, grassy base. Light natural sweeteners like honey or agave syrup can be added to taste. The brewed infusion can also be used as a base for herbal blends, flavored teas, or culinary applications where a fresh, vegetal note is desired. Its smooth, aromatic character and bright flavor make it suitable for daily enjoyment, social tea rituals, or refreshing herbal beverages.

Storage: In a cool, dry space, sealed against the elements as much as possible.
