Botanical Name: Sambucus nigra

Country of Origin:  Bulgaria or Poland

English Name: Elderberry Whole

French Name: Baies de Sureau Entières

Also Known As: Sambucus nigra Berries, Dried Elderberries, Whole Elder Berries

Part Used: Whole dried berries of Sambucus nigra

Description: Elderberry Whole consists of the fully ripened berries of Sambucus nigra, a deciduous shrub native to Europe and western Asia and widely cultivated in temperate regions. The plant produces clusters of small round berries that deepen in colour from green to red and finally to dark purple or nearly black at maturity, at which point they are harvested for drying.

After harvest, the berries are carefully separated from stems and plant material, then cleaned to remove field debris. The berries are dried using controlled low-temperature air-drying processes to reduce moisture while preserving their natural shape, dark colour, and surface texture, resulting in a stable and visually consistent botanical ingredient.

The dried berries retain their rounded form with slightly wrinkled skins and deep purple to black colouring. Their intact structure makes them suitable for applications where whole botanical appearance is preferred, and they offer a uniform size range for easy handling, blending, and storage.

Uses: Elderberry Whole is used in tea-style infusions, beverage blends, culinary recipes, and spice mixtures. The intact berries are also suitable for craft projects, botanical displays, educational herb kits, decorative jar presentations, and natural dye applications where whole dried berry material is desired for colour and visual appeal.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
