Botanical Name: Saponaria Officinalis
Origin: Europe
English Name: Soapwort C/S
French Name: Saponaire Officinale Coupée
Also Known As: Cut and Sifted Soapwort, Common Soapwort, Bouncing Bet, Soapwort Herb
Part Used: Aerial parts and roots of Saponaria officinalis
Description: Soapwort C/S is prepared from Saponaria officinalis, a perennial flowering plant native to Europe and Western Asia and now naturalised in many temperate regions worldwide. The plant typically grows 30–70 centimetres tall, forming upright stems with opposite, lance-shaped green leaves that have smooth edges and a soft surface. From early summer through late summer, clusters of pale pink to soft white flowers bloom at the tops of the stems, each flower displaying five rounded petals. Harvesting takes place when the plant is fully developed, ensuring both aerial parts and roots retain their natural structure and colour.
Harvested plant material is carefully selected to maintain uniformity and visual consistency. Leaves remain soft and green, stems are slender and fibrous, and root fragments are pale beige to light brown with a firm texture. After harvesting, all parts are thoroughly cleaned to remove soil and natural debris. Drying is done using controlled air or low-temperature methods to stabilise moisture while preserving colour and texture. Once dried, the material is cut and sifted into uniform fragments, producing a free-flowing blend with visible leaves, stems, flower pieces, and root segments.
The finished Soapwort C/S displays a natural mix of green leaf fragments, thin stems, occasional pale floral pieces, and light brown root sections. The texture is lightweight and slightly fibrous, with clearly identifiable plant components. The cut and sifted format allows for easy handling, accurate measurement, and consistent blending, while maintaining the botanical identity of Saponaria officinalis.
Uses: Soapwort C/S is commonly used in tea-style infusions, botanical blends, and preparations where visible plant fragments are preferred. It is also suitable for cosmetic formulations such as soaps, cleansers, and bath blends, as well as craft projects, botanical sachets, and decorative displays. The cut herb and root pieces are frequently included in educational botanical collections to illustrate plant morphology and seasonal growth. The cut-and-sifted format allows for precise measuring, easy blending with other botanicals, and versatile use in both home and professional settings, offering a naturally textured botanical ingredient with consistent quality and appearance.
Storage: Let them dry completely before storing them.
