Botanical Name: Polygala Senega

Origin: North America

English Name: Senega Snake Root C/S

French Name: Racine de Sénéga Coupée

Also Known As: Seneca Root, Senega Root, Rattlesnake Root, Polygala Root

Part Used: Roots of Polygala senega

Description: Senega Snake Root C/S is prepared from the dried roots of Polygala senega, a perennial herb native to eastern and central North America. The plant grows in open woodlands, grasslands, and rocky slopes, reaching heights of approximately 20–50 centimetres. It produces narrow lance-shaped green leaves and clusters of small white flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer. Underneath the soil, the plant develops thick, knotty roots with distinctive ridges and a natural twisted form, which are harvested once fully developed.

Roots are harvested during the dormant season, typically in late autumn or early spring, when they reach optimal firmness and density. Mature roots display a light beige to pale brown exterior with visible ringed markings and a slightly curved, fibrous structure. Selection focuses on intact roots that maintain their natural shape, thickness, and surface texture, ensuring consistency before processing.

After harvesting, the roots are gently cleaned to remove soil and natural debris. Drying is done using controlled air or low-temperature methods to stabilise moisture while preserving colour and fibrous structure. Once dried, the roots are cut and sifted into uniform pieces, producing firm fragments with visible ridges and natural root grain.

The finished Senega Snake Root C/S consists of pale tan to light brown root segments with a dense, fibrous interior and rough outer surface. The cut and sifted format allows for easy handling, accurate measurement, and uniform blending. Each piece retains the botanical identity of Polygala senega, offering visually distinct root fragments that remain stable during storage.

Uses: Senega Snake Root C/S is used in tea-style infusions, herbal blends, and root-based preparations where visible root pieces are preferred. It is suitable for cosmetic formulations, craft projects, and educational botanical collections illustrating root morphology. The cut root fragments are also used in formulation and manufacturing processes that require uniform dried root material.

Storage: Store in a cool dry place.
