Botanical Name: Papaver somniferum

Country of Origin: Turkey

English Name: Blue Poppy Seed

French Name: Graines de Pavot Bleu

Also Known As: Blue Poppy Seeds, Poppy Seed Blue, Papaver Seeds, European Blue Poppy Seed

Part Used: Mature seeds of the plant, Papaver somniferum

Description: Blue Poppy Seed is obtained from the mature seeds of Papaver somniferum, an annual flowering plant belonging to the Papaveraceae family. The plant grows upright with a smooth, bluish-green stem and broad lobed leaves covered with a natural waxy coating. During the growing season, it produces large, cup-shaped flowers in shades of white, pink, or purple, followed by rounded seed capsules. These capsules develop throughout late spring and summer, reaching full maturity by late summer when the seeds inside have fully formed.

As the seed pods reach the full size, they dry on the plant and harden, allowing the small, kidney-shaped seeds to loosen inside the capsule. Each seed is extremely small, with a smooth surface and a uniform slate-blue to deep blue-grey colour. Harvesting occurs once the pods are completely dry, ensuring the seeds are fully developed and stable. At this stage, the seeds have a dry, free-flowing nature and consistent appearance.

After harvesting, the seeds are separated from the dried capsules through mechanical shaking or cutting, followed by cleaning to remove pod fragments and dust. The seeds are then dried further if needed to achieve optimal moisture levels. The finished Blue Poppy Seeds are clean, uniform in size, and free flowing, with a matte surface and dense texture that supports easy handling and blending.

The finished product consists of fine, round seeds with a smooth texture and consistent colour. Blue Poppy Seeds remain stable during storage and maintain their physical integrity without clumping. Their small size and even shape make them suitable for precise measurement and uniform distribution in multiple applications.

Uses: Blue Poppy Seeds are widely used in culinary applications such as baking, seasoning blends, toppings for breads and pastries, and inclusion in dry mixes. They are suitable for confectionery production, spice blends, and specialty food formulations. Beyond food use, the seeds are used in decorative displays, educational botanical collections, and manufacturing applications where uniform, visually identifiable seeds are required. Their free-flowing nature also supports use in blending and packaging processes.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
