Also Known As: American Pennyroyal, Wild Pennyroyal, Hedeoma Leaf Pieces, Hedeoma pulegioides Herb C/S, Dried Pennyroyal Herb

Part Used: Aerial parts of the plant, Hedeoma pulegioides

Description: Pennyroyal Herb C/S is prepared from the aerial parts of Hedeoma pulegioides, a low-growing, aromatic perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family, native to North America. The plant grows in compact clusters, forming dense mats up to 30–60 centimetres high, with slender, square stems and small, oval to lance-shaped leaves that are slightly hairy and grey green in colour. During the summer months, the plant produces clusters of tiny pale lilac to blue flowers that grow in leaf axils along the stems. Hedeoma pulegioides thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils and is commonly found in open fields, prairies, and disturbed habitats.

Harvesting occurs during the peak vegetative stage, before flowering becomes extensive, to ensure the leaves and stems are tender, aromatic, and structurally intact. The small, textured leaves are collected along with short sections of stem, preserving their natural arrangement and the distinctive leaf shape. Timing of harvest ensures consistent green-grey colouration, optimal leaf size, and intact fibrous stems, which are essential for producing high-quality cut and sifted herb material.

After harvesting, the aerial parts are cleaned to remove dirt, broken stems, and extraneous debris. The plant material is then dried under controlled low-temperature or air-drying conditions to retain natural colour, leaf structure, and aromatic properties. Once dried, the leaves and stems become brittle yet maintain their identifiable shape and fibrous texture. Drying ensures the herb is stable for storage and suitable for handling without excessive breakage.

The dried plant is then cut and sifted into a uniform C/S format. The finished Pennyroyal Herb C/S contains a balanced mix of small leaf fragments and short stem pieces, displaying natural variation in shape and texture characteristic of Hedeoma pulegioides. The cut format preserves the plant’s visual and aromatic identity, making it easy to blend, handle, and infuse in applications where whole or visible herb pieces are desired.

Uses: Pennyroyal Herb C/S is ideal for tea-style infusions and botanical blends where small, identifiable herb pieces are preferred. Its cut format allows it to be included in culinary presentations such as garnishes, flavouring infusions, and decorative arrangements. The herb is also used in crafting projects, educational plant collections, and botanical displays highlighting the morphology of American pennyroyal. In manufacturing and formulation contexts, the C/S herb is suitable for products requiring consistent cut size, visual plant identity, and stable, aromatic aerial parts.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place in a sealed container.
