Botanical Name: Allium cepa

Country of Origin: India

English Name: Onion Powder

French Name: Poudre d’Oignon

Sanskrit Name: Palandu

Hindi Name: Pyaz Powder

Also Known As: Ground Onion, Dried Onion Powder, Dehydrated Onion Powder, Onion Flour

Part Used: Bulb of Allium cepa

Description: Onion is a widely cultivated biennial plant grown as an annual crop for its edible bulb, which develops underground in layered concentric rings. The plant typically reaches 30–100 cm in height and produces hollow, tubular green leaves above ground. Onion bulbs vary in size, shape, and outer skin colour depending on the variety, commonly ranging from white to pale yellow or light brown. Bulbs used for onion powder are harvested at full maturity to ensure optimal flavour, aroma, and natural colour consistency.

Fresh onions are firm, crisp, and aromatic, with a layered internal structure and a characteristic pungent scent. After harvesting, the bulbs are cured to reduce surface moisture and stabilize the outer layers. They are then cleaned thoroughly to remove soil, roots, and outer skins. The cleaned bulbs are sliced uniformly and dehydrated under controlled low-temperature conditions to remove moisture while preserving flavour intensity, colour, and aromatic compounds.

Once fully dried, the onion slices are finely milled into a smooth, uniform powder. The powder is pale cream to light yellow in colour, free-flowing, and consistent in texture. Sieving is performed to remove coarse particles, ensuring a fine, even grind suitable for blending and formulation. The powder retains the characteristic aroma and flavour profile of onion in a concentrated, convenient form.

Onions thrive in well-drained soils with full sunlight and moderate water availability and are cultivated extensively across temperate and subtropical regions worldwide. Onion powder provides a shelf-stable, easy-to-use alternative to fresh onion, offering consistent quality, long storage life, and versatility across culinary and food production applications.

Uses: Onion Powder is widely used in culinary applications including seasoning blends, spice mixes, sauces, soups, gravies, dressings, marinades, dry rubs, snack coatings, and bakery formulations. Its fine texture allows for quick dispersion and uniform flavour distribution in both dry and liquid preparations. Onion powder is commonly used in processed foods, convenience foods, and food manufacturing where smooth texture, consistent flavour, and ease of handling are required.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
