English Name: Irish Moss Powder

French Name: Poudre de Mousse d’Irlande

Also Known As: Carrageen Moss Powder, Dried Irish Moss Powder, Chondrus Powder, Irish Sea Moss Powder

Part Used: Whole thallus (lichen body) of Chondrus crispus

Description: Irish Moss is a red seaweed native to the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, including Europe, North America, and the Caribbean. It typically grows attached to rocks in intertidal zones, forming fan-shaped, branching fronds. The seaweed is harvested at full maturity to preserve its natural colour, structure, and identifiable characteristics. The mature thalli are leathery when dry and form dense mats along the shoreline.

The thallus of Irish Moss has a slightly translucent, gelatinous texture when wet and becomes firm when dried. The fronds grow in branching, irregular fan-like patterns and are harvested during peak growth to retain their natural pigmentation and structural integrity. Once dried, the seaweed is suitable for milling into a fine, uniform powder while maintaining its botanical character.

After harvesting, the seaweed is cleaned to remove sand, salt, and other extraneous material. It is then dried using controlled low-temperature methods to preserve natural colour and texture. Once fully dried, the thallus is milled into a fine powder and sieved to remove any coarse fragments, resulting in a clean, free-flowing ingredient suitable for blending, storage, and multiple applications.

Uses: Irish Moss Powder is used in culinary recipes, tea-style infusions, herbal and botanical blends, cosmetic formulations, craft projects, decorative displays, and educational herb collections. Its fine texture allows it to blend easily while maintaining the natural characteristics of the seaweed, making it ideal for use as a natural thickener, gelling agent, or textural ingredient in creative applications.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
