Description: Irish Moss is a red seaweed native to the rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, including Europe, North America, and the Caribbean. It typically grows attached to rocks in intertidal zones, forming fan-shaped, branching fronds with a gelatinous texture when wet. The seaweed is harvested at full maturity, retaining its natural colour, structure, and flexible, flake-like characteristics.
The thallus of Irish Moss is thin, leathery, and slightly translucent when dried. The plant grows in dense mats, with branches forming irregular fan-like patterns. Harvesting occurs during peak growth to preserve its structural integrity and natural pigmentation. After drying, the seaweed flakes maintain their shape, making them easily identifiable and suitable for further processing or culinary use.
After harvesting, the seaweed is carefully cleaned to remove sand, salt, and other extraneous material. It is then dried using controlled low-temperature methods to preserve colour and texture. Once dried, the seaweed is processed into flakes of uniform size, with fines and broken fragments removed. The resulting product is a clean, free-flowing botanical ingredient suitable for blending, storage, and various applications.
Uses: Irish Moss Flakes are used in culinary recipes, tea-style infusions, herbal and botanical blends, cosmetic formulations, craft projects, decorative displays, and educational herb collections. Their flake form makes them ideal for use as a natural thickener, gelling agent, or textural ingredient in food preparations and creative applications where the natural form of the seaweed is desired.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
