Country of Origin: China
Common Name: Codonopsis Root
English Name: Dang Shen Root
Also Known As: Codonopsis pilosula Root, Dangshen Root, Dried Codonopsis Root, Chinese Bellflower Root
Part Used: Dried roots of Codonopsis pilosula
Description: Codonopsis Root Whole is obtained from the mature roots of Codonopsis pilosula, a perennial climbing plant native to East Asia and cultivated in temperate regions. The plant develops long, slender roots with a pale beige to light brown outer surface and a firm interior structure. Roots are harvested when fully developed to ensure consistent size and botanical form.
After harvesting, the roots are washed to remove soil and impurities and then dried using controlled air-drying or low-temperature methods. This drying process reduces moisture while preserving the natural shape, surface texture, and colour of the roots. The roots may be gently trimmed to remove fine rootlets before final drying.
The finished dried roots are elongated, slightly curved, and light tan to brown in colour with a fibrous interior visible when broken. The whole-root format maintains the natural botanical identity and structural integrity of the plant material, providing a clean, stable ingredient suitable for handling and storage.
Uses: Codonopsis Root Whole is used in culinary preparations such as soups, broths, stews, and slow-cooked dishes where whole roots are preferred. It is also suitable for botanical craft projects, educational herb kits, decorative plant displays, and creative applications that use intact dried roots for visual and textural interest.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in a well-sealed container.
