Botanical Name: Syzygium aromaticum

Country of Origin: India

Common Name: Cloves Whole

English Name: Whole Cloves

Sanskrit Name: Lavanga

Hindi Name: Laung

Ayurvedic Name: Lavanga

Also Known As: Clove Buds, Whole Clove Buds, Syzygium aromaticum Buds, Dried Cloves

Part Used: Dried unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum

Description: Cloves Whole are obtained from the unopened flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, an evergreen tree native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia and cultivated in tropical regions. The tree produces clusters of pale pink to red buds that are harvested just before opening to preserve their natural clove shape and surface structure.

After harvesting, the buds are cleaned to remove stems and debris and then dried using controlled air-drying or low-temperature methods. During drying, the buds darken to a rich brown colour and develop a firm, woody texture. This process stabilizes the buds while retaining their distinctive rounded heads and slender stems.

The finished whole cloves are uniform in size, deep brown in colour, and dry with a smooth surface and intact bud heads. The whole-bud format ensures easy handling, consistent appearance, and suitability for a wide range of culinary and non-food applications where recognizable spice material is required.

Uses: Cloves Whole are widely used in culinary applications such as baking, beverages, savoury dishes, sauces, marinades, pickling liquids, and spice blends. Whole buds are commonly used in infusions, simmered recipes, and flavouring liquids where gradual flavour release is preferred. They are also suitable for decorative spice jars, potpourri-style blends, botanical craft projects, and educational herb kits where their distinctive form and dark colour add visual interest.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
