Description: Butterfly Pea Flower is produced from the dried blossoms of Clitoria ternatea, a perennial climbing vine native to Southeast Asia and now cultivated in many tropical and subtropical regions. The plant forms slender stems that can reach 2–3 meters in length and is known for its vivid blue flowers with a distinctive petal structure. The blooms are picked during their peak colour stage, gently cleaned to remove natural field residue, and dried to maintain their bright blue to deep indigo tones.
The Clitoria ternatea vine develops compound leaves arranged alternately along its stems, with single large flowers emerging from the leaf axils. The blossoms are naturally rich in pigment, giving them strong visual impact even after drying. The dried flowers preserve their lightweight, papery texture and characteristic colour variations that range from vibrant blue to bluish-purple depending on maturity and growing conditions. Their whole-flower form adds noticeable dimension and natural aesthetic appeal to any botanical preparation.
To create a stable dried floral ingredient, the freshly collected blossoms are air-dried or warm-air dried in controlled environments to protect their structure and prevent colour fading. The drying process reduces moisture while helping the petals maintain their natural form. The flowers are then sorted to remove plant fragments and ensure clean, intact material that integrates easily into decorative and creative applications.
Uses: Butterfly Pea Flower is used in natural colouring projects, botanical craft blends, decorative jar arrangements, resin art compositions, potpourri-style mixtures, and educational herb kits. The vivid blue colour and intact floral shape make it ideal for visual presentations, nature-themed artwork, and creative formulations that benefit from striking botanical elements. The flowers can also be infused into liquids for natural colour extraction in culinary or craft applications where plant-derived pigments are desired.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
