Botanical Name: Hordeum Vulgare
Country of Origin: Germany
Also Known As: Barley Leaf C/S, Hordeum vulgare Grass Cut & Sifted, Young Barley Tops
Part Used: Young aerial grass blades of Hordeum vulgare, cut and sifted
Description: Barley Grass Tops C/S is produced from the young leaf blades of Hordeum vulgare, a widely cultivated cereal grass grown across temperate regions. The material consists of dried, cut pieces of tender grass tops in shades of bright to muted green, carrying a naturally fresh, grassy aroma. The cut-and-sifted form preserves much of the plant’s original structure, giving the material a light, fibrous texture that works well in blends, displays, and botanical craft uses.
Hordeum vulgare is an annual grass that can grow between 60–120 cm tall, forming slender green leaves and upright stems that later develop grain heads. The young tops are harvested before the plant matures, a stage noted for its vivid green colour and softer leaf structure. When dried, the grass maintains much of its natural appearance, making it a visually appealing botanical ingredient for creative and instructional applications.
Young grass blades are harvested during early growth, cleaned to remove natural field debris, and dried using controlled warm-air or low-temperature methods to help retain colour and reduce moisture. Once fully dried, the material is cut into uniform pieces and sifted to remove excess dust and ensure consistency. This process results in a clean, stable botanical material made solely from dried grass tops without additives.
Uses: Barley Grass Tops C/S is used in botanical craft projects, natural colour demonstrations, potpourri-style mixtures, resin art, decorative jar displays, incense blends, and educational herb kits. Its fibrous structure and natural green tones make it suitable for formulations and creative applications that rely on intact plant pieces. The material blends well into visual craft concepts and botanical preparations where a clean, dried grass component is desired.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
