Botanical Name: Alkanna Tinctoria

Country of Origin: Albania

Description: Alkanet Root C/S is made from the dried roots of Alkanna tinctoria, a perennial plant native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Western Asia. The roots of this species are naturally dark reddish-brown and have long been recognized for the stable plant pigments they contain. When cut into small pieces, the material displays the characteristic colour and texture of dried, fibrous root.

The production process begins with harvesting mature roots from the plant, which are then cleaned to remove soil and natural debris. After cleaning, the roots are dried under controlled conditions to preserve their structure and maintain their colour. Once fully dried, the roots are cut into uniform pieces suitable for use in projects that require intact botanical material rather than a powdered form. No additional processing steps such as milling or grinding are used for the cut-and-sifted format, allowing the natural appearance of the root to remain intact.

Alkanet Root C/S is widely used in crafting, natural dye work, and cosmetic formulation because of the colour it produces when infused. The root imparts shades ranging from deep red to purple, depending on the medium, and is commonly added to oils, soaps, and other creative preparations for its plant-derived colouring effect.

In crafting and educational projects, the cut root is valued for its natural pigment properties and its distinctive appearance as a whole botanical material.

Its stable colour profile and coarse texture make it suitable for applications where a natural dye source or visually identifiable botanical ingredient is desired.
