Botanical Name: Acacia Catechu
Country of Origin : India
Description: Acacia catechu powder is made from the heartwood of Senegalia catechu, a small deciduous tree native to India and other regions of South Asia. The inner wood of this species is naturally dark and rich in tannins, giving the powder its characteristic deep brown colour and wood-derived appearance. Because the heartwood contains stable natural pigments, it has long been valued in processes that depend on consistent, plant-based colour materials.
To create the powder, mature heartwood is selected, cleaned, and thoroughly dried. The dried wood is then boiled to draw out its natural tannins and colour compounds, producing a concentrated liquid extract. This extract is separated from the spent wood and slowly reduced until it solidifies into a dense, brittle substance known as cutch. Once fully dried, the cutch is milled and sifted to achieve a uniform, fine powder that reflects the original qualities of the heartwood.
Acacia catechu powder is commonly used in natural textile dyeing, where it yields warm brown and earthy shades depending on the fibre and mordant involved. Its tannin content also makes it useful in traditional vegetable-tanning processes for leather, where plant-based colour and binding characteristics are required. In addition to these applications, the powder can be incorporated into crafting and cosmetic formulations as a natural source of brown pigment, offering a consistent hue derived directly from plant material.
