Botanical Name: Ocimum basilicum

Country of Origin: India

Also Known As: Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum Leaf, Basil Leaf Cut

Part Used: Dried leaves of Ocimum basilicum, cut and sifted

Description: Basil Leaf C/S is made from the dried leaves of Ocimum basilicum, an aromatic annual herb widely cultivated in warm and temperate regions. The material consists of cut, sifted leaf pieces that range from medium to deep green, carrying a naturally fresh, herbaceous aroma. The cut-and-sifted form maintains much of the leaf’s original structure, giving it a light, leafy texture suitable for culinary and botanical craft uses.

Ocimum basilicum forms soft green leaves on branching stems and produces small white flowers during its growing cycle. The leaves are harvested at a stage when their colour, aroma, and structure are at their peak. Once dried, the leaves retain their characteristic appearance, making them a visually appealing ingredient for food preparation, educational purposes, and natural craft projects.

Fresh leaves are gathered during the active growth season, cleaned to remove natural field debris, and dried using controlled warm-air or low-temperature methods that help preserve colour and reduce moisture. After drying, the leaves are cut into uniform pieces and sifted to remove excess dust.

Uses: Basil Leaf C/S is used in a wide range of culinary applications, including seasoning blends, soups, sauces, dressings, marinades, and baked dishes where a natural herbal flavour is desired. It fits well into recipe development and pantry use as a dried culinary herb.

In crafting and botanical projects, it can be used in potpourri-style mixtures, educational herb kits, decorative displays, and natural aroma experiments where intact leaf pieces contribute visual and aromatic elements.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
