Botanical Name: Curcuma longa

Country of Origin: India

English Name: Turmeric Powder

French Name: Poudre de Curcuma

Sanskrit Name: Haridra

Hindi Name: Haldi Powder

Also Known As: Ground Turmeric, Curcuma Powder

Part Used: Rhizomes (underground stems) of Curcuma longa

Description: Turmeric Powder is produced from the dried rhizomes of Curcuma longa, a tropical perennial plant native to South Asia and widely cultivated in India and other warm regions. The plant typically grows between 60 and 100 centimetres tall, producing broad green leaves and pale-yellow flowers. Beneath the soil, thick finger-like rhizomes develop, displaying a deep orange interior when freshly cut. Harvesting takes place once the foliage begins to wither, indicating full rhizome maturity and optimal colour development.

After harvesting, the rhizomes are thoroughly cleaned to remove soil and natural debris, then gently boiled or steamed before drying to stabilize colour and texture. Once fully dried, the rhizomes are finely milled into a smooth, uniform powder. This process preserves the vibrant golden-orange colour and natural aroma while creating a free-flowing product suitable for a wide range of applications.

The finished Turmeric Powder displays a bright yellow to deep golden-orange hue with a soft, fine texture. It remains stable during storage, retaining its colour and consistency over time. The finely ground form allows for easy measuring, blending, and incorporation into recipes and formulations while maintaining the botanical integrity of Curcuma longa.

Uses: Turmeric Powder is commonly used in culinary applications such as curries, soups, rice dishes, sauces, marinades, and seasoning blends where its vivid colour enhances food presentation. It is also suitable for tea-style infusions, beverage mixes, cosmetic formulations, bath products, natural colouring projects, botanical sachets, and craft applications. Turmeric Powder is frequently included in educational botanical collections to demonstrate rhizome processing and powdered spice preparation. Its smooth texture allows for precise portioning, easy blending with other botanicals, and versatile use in both home kitchens and professional food or formulation environments, offering consistent quality and bright natural colour.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
