Botanical Name: Scutellaria lateriflora

Country of Origin: United States

English Name: Skullcap Herb C/S

French Name: Herbe de Scutellaire Coupée

Also Known As: Cut and Sifted Skullcap, American Skullcap, Scutellaria Herb, Scutellaria lateriflora

Part Used: Aerial parts (leaves and flowering tops) of Scutellaria lateriflora

Description: Skullcap Herb C/S is prepared from the aerial parts of Scutellaria lateriflora, a perennial herb native to North America, particularly the eastern and central regions. The plant typically grows 30–90 centimetres tall, with slender, square stems and opposite, toothed green leaves. Delicate blue to violet flowers bloom along the upper stems from late spring to summer, forming small clusters that add visual interest. The leaves and flowering tops are harvested during peak bloom to preserve the plant’s colour, aroma, and natural structure before being processed into cut and sifted form.

Harvested aerial parts are carefully selected to ensure only intact leaves and flowering tops are used. Mature leaves are soft yet firm, with visible veins and a smooth texture, while the flowering tops retain their delicate petal structure and natural colour. Selection ensures consistency in size, shape, and visual appearance, preserving the botanical identity of Scutellaria lateriflora prior to processing.

After harvesting, the plant material is gently cleaned to remove dust, stems, and debris. Drying is performed using controlled air or low-temperature methods to stabilise moisture while maintaining natural colour, texture, and structure of the leaves and flowers. Once dried, the aerial parts are cut and sifted into uniform fragments, producing a free-flowing product with consistent size and shape.

The finished Skullcap Herb C/S consists of lightweight, cut fragments with clearly visible leaf veins, blue-violet flower clusters, and natural green foliage. The cut and sifted format allows for easy handling, accurate measurement, and uniform blending, while preserving the plant’s botanical characteristics. The product remains stable during storage and retains its original colour, texture, and form.

Uses: Skullcap Herb C/S is used in tea-style infusions, herbal blends, and preparations where intact cut herb fragments are preferred for visual appeal and gradual extraction. The cut leaves and flowering tops are suitable for inclusion in cosmetic and bath formulations, botanical sachets, craft projects, and educational botanical collections illustrating leaf and flower morphology. They can also be incorporated into decorative displays and infusion-based blends where identifiable plant fragments are desired. The cut and sifted format allows for flexible portioning, blending, and infusion, making it convenient for home and professional use while retaining the authentic appearance and structure of the aerial parts.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
