Botanical Name: Hippophae rhamnoides

Country of Origin: Ukraine

English Name: Sea Buckthorn Berries

French Name: Baies d’Argousier

Also Known As: Hippophae Berries, Sea Berry, Sandthorn Berries

Part Used: Berries of Hippophae rhamnoides

Description: Sea Buckthorn Berries are harvested from Hippophae rhamnoides, a hardy deciduous shrub native to Europe and Asia that thrives in cold climates, sandy soils, and coastal or mountainous regions. The plant typically grows between 2 to 6 metres in height, forming dense, thorny branches covered with narrow silver-green leaves. During late spring to early summer, small yellowish flowers appear, followed by clusters of bright orange berries that ripen from late summer through early autumn, creating a striking contrast against the pale foliage.

The berries grow tightly along the woody branches and are oval to round, measuring approximately 6–9 mm in diameter. When fully grown, they develop a vivid orange to deep amber colour with smooth, glossy skins and juicy interiors. Gathering is done carefully once the berries reach peak ripeness, ensuring optimal size, colour consistency, and firmness. Only intact, fully developed berries are selected to preserve their natural appearance and botanical integrity.

After collecting, the berries are carefully cleaned to remove stems and surface debris. Drying is done using controlled air or low-temperature methods to stabilise moisture while maintaining the berries’ vibrant colour, shape, and surface texture. This careful drying process allows the berries to retain their natural form and visual appeal, resulting in whole dried fruit that remains structurally stable and free flowing for storage and handling.

The finished Sea Buckthorn Berries display a rich orange hue with consistent sizing and a firm outer texture. Each berry retains its natural oval shape and glossy finish, offering a visually striking dried fruit product. The whole-berry format provides clear botanical identity and makes the product easy to measure, blend, or display. These dried berries maintain stability over time, making them suitable for a wide range of botanical, culinary, and formulation applications.

Uses: Sea Buckthorn Berries are used in tea-style infusions, fruit and botanical blends, and culinary preparations such as beverage mixes, powdered blends (after grinding), and decorative garnishes. They are also suitable for cosmetic formulations, infused oils, craft projects, and educational botanical collections illustrating berry structure and seasonal growth. The whole berries are valued for their vibrant colour, consistent size, and natural appearance in blending and presentation.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
