English Name: Rooibos Tea
French Name: Thé Rooibos
Also Known As: Red Bush Tea, Rooibos Herbal Tea, South African Red Tea, Rooibos Red Bush
Part Used: Leaves and young stems of Aspalathus linearis
Description: Rooibos Tea, a loose-leaf herbal infusion, is made from the leaves and young stems of Aspalathus linearis, a shrub native to the Cederberg region of South Africa. The plant grows naturally in dry, mountainous terrain and typically reaches a height of about 1 to 1.5 meters. Rooibos has fine, needle-like green leaves and slender woody stems that are harvested for tea production. It is a perennial plant, meaning it continues to grow year after year rather than completing its life cycle in a single season. Harvesting usually takes place once annually during the warmer months, when the plant material is cut and collected.
After collecting, the rooibos stems and leaves are cut into smaller pieces and bruised to initiate natural oxidation. This natural oxidation gives the tea its distinctive reddish-brown color. The material is then spread out to dry under the sun, allowing moisture to evaporate while developing its characteristic aroma and appearance. Once completely dried, the leaves are cleaned and prepared as loose-leaf tea. Rooibos produces a clear amber-red infusion with a naturally smooth, slightly sweet flavor and mild earthy notes, without sharp or bitter qualities.
Uses: Rooibos Tea can be prepared hot or cold and is easy to brew. For a hot infusion, add one teaspoon of loose rooibos leaves to a cup of hot water and steep for 5 to 10 minutes, depending on preferred strength. The leaves remain smooth even with extended steeping. To make iced tea, brew a stronger infusion using hot water, allow it to cool, and serve over some ice. Rooibos can also be cold brewed by steeping the leaves in cool water in the refrigerator for several hours, producing a smooth and refreshing beverage.
Rooibos Tea pairs well with a range of complementary ingredients that enhance its natural aroma and flavor. Citrus peel, vanilla, cinnamon, or light sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup can be added for gentle variation. Milk or plant-based alternatives may also be used for a richer texture. Brewed rooibos can serve as a base for tea blends or as a naturally colored liquid in culinary and beverage preparations. Its smooth and mellow character makes it suitable for everyday enjoyment in a variety of settings.
Storage: In a cool, dry space, sealed against the elements as much as possible.
