English Name: Rehmannia Root
French Name: Racine de Rehmannia
Also Known As: Chinese Foxglove Root, Rehmannia Root Whole, Dried Rehmannia Root, Foxglove Rehmannia Root
Part Used: Roots of the plant, Rehmannia glutinosa
Description: Rehmannia Root is obtained from Rehmannia glutinosa, a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. The plant is native to China and is cultivated in temperate regions with fertile, well-drained soils. It grows as a low, spreading herb with soft, hairy leaves arranged in a basal rosette, producing tubular flowers on upright stems during the flowering season, followed by root development beneath the soil.
The roots grow as thick, fleshy, elongated structures that taper gradually at the ends. Collection takes place when the plant grows to the full size, typically in late summer to autumn, once the roots have achieved the full growth and density. Mature roots are harvested for consistent shape, intact structure, and uniform surface texture, ensuring visual and physical uniformity prior to processing.
After harvesting, the roots are gently cleaned to remove soil and natural debris. They are then dried using controlled air or low-temperature drying methods to stabilise moisture while maintaining the root’s natural form. Once dried, the roots become firm and dense, with a dark brown to black exterior and a slightly glossy surface, reflecting the natural characteristics of Rehmannia glutinosa.
The finished Rehmannia Root consists of solid, weighty pieces with a smooth to slightly wrinkled outer texture and dense internal structure. The dried roots are durable and stable, suitable for handling, storage, and further processing. Their consistent appearance and preserved botanical identity make them appropriate for use where whole or cut dried roots are required.
Uses: Rehmannia Root is used in tea-style infusions and botanical blends where whole or cut root pieces are desired for visual and textural presence. It is suitable for inclusion in cosmetic and personal care formulations such as infused oils, bath blends, and handmade products. The roots are also used in educational botanical collections, craft projects, decorative displays, and manufacturing applications that require identifiable dried root material with consistent size and structure.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
