Botanical Name: Pinus sylvestris

Country of Origin: Ukraine

English Name: Pine Buds

French Name: Bourgeons de Pin

Also Known As: Pinus Sylvestris Buds, Scots Pine Buds, Pine Tree Buds, Dried Pine Buds, Pine Tip Buds

Part Used: Young buds of the plant, Pinus sylvestris

Description: Pine Buds are harvested from the young, tender shoots of Pinus sylvestris, commonly known as Scots Pine, a coniferous tree in the Pinaceae family. This evergreen species is native to Europe and Asia, recognized for its tall, straight trunk, dense conical canopy, and needle-like leaves. New buds emerge at the tips of branches during early spring, appearing as compact, bright green structures with a slightly resinous coating, which develop into new shoots and needles as the season progresses.

Harvesting is conducted when the buds are fully formed but still tightly closed, ensuring they are firm, intact, and aromatic. Only healthy, uniform buds are selected, preserving their natural conical shape, vibrant colour, and surface texture. Collecting at this stage captures the buds’ optimal visual and structural characteristics, which are critical for processing into dried, cut, or decorative forms.

After harvesting, the buds are cleaned to remove any debris, older needles, or environmental particles. They are then air-dried or low-temperature dried, which preserves their bright green to olive-green colour and slightly sticky, resinous texture. Drying reduces moisture while maintaining structural integrity, aroma, and the subtle resinous qualities of the buds, producing a stable and durable botanical material.

The final Pine Buds product consists of small, intact buds that retain their natural conical shape and textured surface. The dried buds are lightweight, firm, and visually consistent, making them ideal for blending, infusion, or decorative purposes where the original bud morphology is important.

Uses: Pine Buds are commonly used in tea-style infusions and botanical blends, offering visual appeal along with a mild pine aroma. They are suitable for culinary uses such as garnishes, flavouring syrups, or decorative presentations. The buds are also popular in crafting projects, potpourri, and aromatic displays that highlight their conical shape and resinous texture. Additionally, they are ideal for educational or botanical collections that demonstrate bud development, needle emergence, and the early growth stages of Pinus sylvestris.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
