Botanical Name: Mentha piperita.

Country of Origin: Australia

English Name: Peppermint Oil

French Name: Huile Essentielle de Menthe Poivrée

Also Known As: Mentha Piperita Oil, Peppermint Oil, Mint Oil, Peppermint Leaf Oil

Part Used: Leaves and aerial parts of the plant, Mentha piperita

Description: Peppermint Essential Oil is derived from the leaves and flowering tops of Mentha piperita, a perennial herbaceous plant in the Lamiaceae family. The plant features upright square stems with pairs of lance-shaped, dark green leaves, which are slightly textured and aromatic. Small purple to lilac flowers appear in clusters along the upper stems during summer. Peppermint naturally grows in moist, temperate regions and thrives in full sunlight with well-drained soil.

Harvesting is carried out during peak leaf development when the aromatic compounds are most concentrated. The aerial parts are carefully collected to preserve the leaf structure and maximize oil content. Timing is critical, as the menthol and menthone levels vary during the plant’s growth cycle. Only healthy, undamaged leaves and top stems are selected for oil extraction.

After harvest, the plant material undergoes steam distillation, where low-pressure steam extracts volatile compounds from the leaves and flowers. The vapours are condensed into liquid, separating the essential oil from water. The resulting oil is clear to pale green, with a sharp, fresh, and minty aroma characteristic of peppermint.

The final product is a free flowing, visually consistent essential oil that retains the natural fragrance profile of peppermint leaves. Its texture is smooth and slightly viscous, and the oil maintains its aromatic integrity when stored under proper conditions. The concentrated nature of the oil makes it suitable for blending, formulation, and other applications where peppermint scent is desired.

Uses: Peppermint Essential Oil is widely used in fragrance formulations, including soaps, candles, bath products, and personal care items, for its crisp mint aroma. It is ideal for perfumery blends, scented crafts, and decorative applications such as potpourri or room fragrance compositions. The oil can be incorporated into cosmetic products like lotions and creams to add a refreshing aroma. Additionally, it is suitable for educational and botanical displays that showcase concentrated plant extracts in liquid form.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
