Origin: USA
English Name: Oatstraw Powder
French Name: Poudre d’Herbe d’Avoine
Also Known As: Oat Herb Powder, Dried Oatstraw Powder, Milled Oat Herb, Avena sativa Powder
Part Used: Aerial parts (stems and leaves) of Avena sativa
Description: Oatstraw is the aerial portion of the oat plant, a hardy annual grass native to Europe and widely cultivated in temperate regions worldwide. The plant typically grows 0.5–1.5 metres tall with slender, hollow stems, lance-shaped green leaves, and small flowering spikes that produce oat grains. Stems and leaves are harvested during the flowering stage when they are fully developed to ensure maximum retention of colour, texture, and structural integrity before processing.
Fresh oatstraw is light to medium green, fibrous, and flexible, with a mild grassy aroma. The stems are hollow while the leaves are flat and lance-shaped with visible veins. After harvesting, the aerial parts are thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, debris, and coarse stems. Controlled low-temperature drying preserves the natural green colour, fibrous texture, and visible botanical features, while preventing brittleness or discoloration.
Once dried, the oatstraw is milled into a fine, uniform powder and sieved to remove any coarse fragments. The resulting powder retains the green hue, subtle grassy aroma, and fibrous character of the plant while providing a convenient, free-flowing ingredient. Controlled milling ensures uniform particle size, smooth texture, and botanical integrity, making it suitable for blending, storage, and multiple applications.
Oatstraw thrives in well-drained soils, open fields, and meadows with full sunlight. It is hardy, adaptable, and produces abundant stems and leaves during the growing season. The resulting powder provides a stable, consistent product while maintaining the identifiable traits of the oat plant, ensuring reliability for botanical applications.
Uses: Oatstraw Powder is used in tea-style infusions, herbal and botanical blends, dry mixes, culinary preparations, craft projects, cosmetic and personal care formulations, decorative displays, and educational herb collections. Its fine, smooth texture allows for even dispersion in liquids and dry preparations. The vibrant green colour, mild aroma, and preserved botanical characteristics make it suitable for creative, instructional, and visual applications where plant origin and morphology are important.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in a sealed container.
