Botanical Name: Avena sativa

Country of Origin: United States

English Name: Oatstraw Herb C/S

French Name: Herbe d’Avoine Coupée et Tamisée

Also Known As: Oat Straw Cut & Sifted, Dried Oat Herb, Avena sativa Herb C/S, Oat Herb Pieces

Part Used: Aerial parts (stems and leaves) of Avena sativa

Description: Oatstraw is the aerial portion of the oat plant, a hardy annual grass native to Europe and widely cultivated in temperate regions worldwide. The plant typically grows 0.5–1.5 metres tall, with slender, hollow stems, lance-shaped green leaves, and small flowering spikes that produce oat grains. The stems and leaves are harvested during the flowering stage when they are fully developed, capturing their natural colour, texture, and structural integrity for processing.

Fresh oatstraw is light to medium green, flexible, and fibrous, with a mild grassy aroma. The stems are hollow, while the leaves are flat and lance-shaped with visible veins. Harvested material is carefully cleaned to remove dust, debris, and coarse stems. Controlled low-temperature drying is performed to preserve the green colour, fibrous texture, and botanical characteristics while preventing brittleness or discoloration.

After drying, the oatstraw is cut and sifted into uniform pieces, maintaining visible leaf and stem fragments while removing fines and broken pieces. The resulting cut and sifted herb is free-flowing, consistent in size, and retains its natural appearance. This careful preparation preserves the identifiable traits of the oat plant while providing a convenient form suitable for blending and storage.

Oatstraw grows well in well-drained soils, open fields, and meadows, preferring full sunlight and temperate climates. The plant is hardy and adaptable, producing abundant stems and leaves during the growing season. The cut and sifted oatstraw retains its botanical identity, natural colour, and texture, making it suitable for applications where recognizable plant material is desired.

Uses: Oatstraw Herb C/S is used in tea-style infusions, herbal and botanical blends, culinary preparations, craft projects, cosmetic formulations, decorative displays, and educational herb collections. Its fibrous texture and free-flowing nature allow for easy blending and even dispersion in dry mixes. The natural green colour, visible leaf and stem fragments, and authentic appearance make it ideal for visual, creative, and instructional applications where botanical identity and plant morphology are important.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
