Botanical Name: Balsamodendron Myrrh

Origin: India

English Name: Myrrh Gum Pieces

French Name: Morceaux de Gomme de Myrrhe

Also Known As: Myrrh Resin Pieces, Balsamodendron Myrrh Gum, Dried Myrrh Resin, Myrrh Tears

Part Used: Dried resin (gum) of Balsamodendron myrrh

Description: Myrrh is a natural aromatic resin obtained from small, thorny trees native to arid and semi-arid regions of East Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. These slow-growing trees typically reach 2–5 metres in height and are adapted to dry environments with rocky, well-drained soils. The trees have sparse branching, thin bark, and small, simple leaves that minimise moisture loss. Resin forms when the bark is naturally fissured or lightly tapped, allowing a milky sap to exude and slowly harden on exposure to air.

As the resin dries, it solidifies into irregularly shaped gum pieces commonly referred to as “tears.” These pieces range in colour from golden amber to reddish-brown and may show translucent edges when broken. The surface is rough and matte, reflecting its natural formation process. Myrrh gum has a strong, earthy, balsamic aroma with warm, resinous notes that become more pronounced when the pieces are warmed or crushed. The resin is collected only after it has fully hardened to ensure stability, aroma retention, and consistent texture.

After harvesting, the gum pieces are carefully cleaned to remove sand, bark, and other natural debris while preserving their original structure. The resin requires no artificial drying, as it naturally cures in the dry climate where it forms. Once cleaned, the pieces are sorted and graded for uniformity and quality. This minimal processing maintains the natural botanical character, density, and aromatic profile of the resin, resulting in a stable, long-lasting raw material.

Myrrh-producing trees yield resin seasonally, with production influenced by rainfall and environmental conditions. The hardened gum pieces are durable and store well under dry conditions, making them suitable for long-term storage and repeated use. Their natural form, aroma, and visual character make them a distinctive botanical resin with broad applications.

Uses: Myrrh Gum Pieces are used in incense blends, loose resin burning, aromatic craft projects, natural fragrance formulations, cosmetic and soap-making applications, decorative botanical displays, and educational plant collections. The resin pieces may be used whole or gently crushed for blending, allowing controlled release of aroma in incense or fragrance preparations. Their distinctive appearance, natural texture, and rich aromatic profile make them suitable for creative, aromatic, and instructional uses where authentic plant resins are required.

Storage: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
