Description: This deciduous shrub or tree can reach a height of 30 feet. Its trunk and stems are composed of hard wood and feature smooth ash-gray bark with thorny branches. The leaves are small, shiny, serrated, and irregularly toothed with three lobes, appearing dark green on the upper side and light bluish-green on the underside. Terminal corymbs host white flowers with rounded petals. The fruit, known as haw, is a fleshy pome with 2 to 3 seeds, displaying a scarlet exterior and a yellowish, pulpy interior. This genus is distributed worldwide. Notably, the 1-5 inch straight or curved single thorns on the haw distinguish it from other native shrubs or trees on this continent.
