English Name: Burdock Root Tea

French Name: Thé de Racine de Bardane

Also Known As: Greater Burdock Tea, Arctium Tea, Bardana Tea, Burdock Herbal Tea

Part Used: Roots of Arctium lappa

Description: Burdock Root Tea is a loose-leaf herbal infusion made from the dried roots of Arctium lappa, a biennial plant native to Europe and Asia and widely cultivated in North America. The plant grows from a deep taproot and can reach heights of 60 to 180 centimeters in its first year, with broad, heart-shaped green leaves that form a rosette near the base. Burdock develops flowering stems in its second year, producing small purple thistle-like flowers. The roots are harvested in late autumn or early spring of the first year when they are mature, firm, and full of natural flavor. Burdock is a biennial plant, meaning it completes its lifecycle in two years, and the roots are typically collected before flowering for optimal quality.

After harvesting, the roots are carefully cleaned, sliced, and gently dried to retain their natural color and earthy aroma. The drying process is controlled to prevent bitterness and preserve the subtle, slightly sweet and nutty flavor of the root. Once dried, the roots are cut into small pieces suitable for loose-leaf tea preparation. When brewed, Burdock Root Tea produces a light amber to golden infusion with a mild, earthy aroma and a naturally smooth flavor that is subtly nutty and slightly sweet, making it suitable for daily enjoyment.

Uses: Burdock Root Tea can be brewed hot or cold, depending on preference. For a hot infusion, add one teaspoon of dried root pieces to a cup of hot water and steep for 8 to 12 minutes to release the full flavor. For a milder cup, shorten the steeping time. To make iced tea, brew a stronger infusion, allow it to cool, and serve over ice for a refreshing beverage. Burdock roots can also be simmered for longer durations in water to create a more concentrated form suitable for culinary infusions and herbal blends.

Burdock Root Tea pairs well with other roots and herbs such as ginger, dandelion, licorice, or cinnamon, which add gentle aromatic notes and deepen the flavor profile. Light natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup can be added to taste without overpowering the earthy character of the root. The tea can also be used as a base in herbal blends or for culinary applications where a warm, mild, and naturally flavorful infusion is desired. Its earthy, smooth flavor and subtle aroma make it a versatile and approachable herbal tea for daily rituals.

Storage: In a cool, dry space, sealed against the elements as much as possible.
