Botanical Name: Fucus vesiculosus

Country of Origin: Canada

English Name: Bladderwrack

Also Known As: Bladder Wrack Powder, Fucus vesiculosus Powder, Rockweed Powder, Sea Oak Powder, Black Tang Powder

Part Used: Dried thallus of Fucus vesiculosus, finely milled into powder

Description: Bladderwrack Powder is made from the dried thallus of Fucus vesiculosus, a brown seaweed native to the cold, tidal coastlines of the North Atlantic and North Pacific. This marine plant forms branching, flattened fronds that can grow 1–2 meters long and display natural air bladders that help them float in shallow waters. After harvesting, the seaweed is rinsed to remove natural ocean residue, dried to preserve its structure, and then milled into a fine powder with a uniform texture.

Fucus vesiculosus develops broad olive-brown fronds that vary in colour depending on growth conditions and tidal exposure. Once processed into powder, the material retains the plant’s natural marine aroma and characteristic deep, earthy tones. The powdered form allows easy blending into culinary mixtures, seasoning formulations, and craft applications where a smooth, dispersible seaweed ingredient is preferred.

Harvested seaweed is washed, dried using natural sun-drying or controlled warm-air methods, and then ground into a fine powder before being sifted for consistency. The result is a uniform botanical powder suitable for a wide range of culinary and creative uses.

Uses: Bladderwrack Powder is used in seasoning blends, culinary broths, sea-vegetable flavouring mixtures, and food preparation where powdered marine botanicals are desired. It is also suitable for natural dye projects, handmade craft formulations, coastal-themed art, resin work, and educational kits focusing on marine plants. The fine texture makes it easy to incorporate into dry blends, pastes, and craft materials that require a smooth, plant-based powder.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
