Botanical Name: Berberis vulgaris/Berberi aristata

Country of Origin: India

Also Known As: Barberry Bark Powder, Berberis vulgaris Bark Powder, Barberry Root Bark Powder

Part Used: Dried bark of Berberis vulgaris, finely milled into powder

Description: Barberry Bark Powder is made from the dried bark of Berberis vulgaris, a deciduous shrub native to Europe and parts of Western Asia and now naturalized in many temperate regions. The shrub is characterised by its small oval leaves, bright yellow flowers, and red elongated berries, along with its distinctively coloured bark. Once dried and milled, the bark forms a finely textured powder in shades of yellow-brown to tan, carrying a naturally woody, earthy aroma typical of the plant. The powder’s uniform texture makes it suitable for dry blending, botanical craft work, and applications requiring consistent particle size.

Berberis vulgaris typically grows as a dense, thorny shrub reaching 1–3 metres in height. Its bark has long been valued in botanical preparations due to its colour, structure, and compatibility with plant-based mixtures. When processed into a powder, the bark maintains much of its natural fibrous character, contributing to its suitability for various creative and formulation-focused uses.

Dried bark is sourced from mature shrubs, cleaned to remove natural field material, and then dried under controlled conditions to achieve a stable moisture level. The material is then mechanically milled into a fine powder, followed by sifting to achieve uniform granulation. This results in a stable, free-flowing botanical powder made entirely from the bark without added components.

Uses : Barberry Bark Powder is used in botanical craft projects, natural dye experimentation, resin work, incense composition, educational herb kits, and dry formulations that incorporate plant-based materials.

Its fine texture and characteristic colour make it suitable for creative blends, pigment-style mixtures, and display applications where a consistent botanical powder is required.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
