Botanical Name: Sesamum indicum

Country Of Origin: India

English Name: White Sesame Seeds

French Name: Graines de Sésame Blanc

Sanskrit Name: Tila

Hindi Name: Safed Til

Also Known As: White Til Seeds, Hulled Sesame Seeds

Part Used: Mature seeds of Sesamum indicum

Description: White Sesame Seeds are harvested from the seed pods of Sesamum indicum, an annual flowering plant native to tropical and subtropical regions and widely cultivated in Asia, Africa, and parts of the Middle East. The plant typically grows between 50 and 100 centimetres tall, producing slender green stems and small tubular flowers that range from white to pale pink. After flowering, elongated seed capsules form and mature, each containing numerous small, flat seeds. Harvesting is carried out once the pods have fully ripened and begun to dry, ensuring uniform colour, size, and texture.

After harvesting, the seeds are separated from the pods, cleaned to remove natural debris, and gently dried. Depending on processing, the outer hull is removed to achieve the characteristic pale cream colour associated with white sesame seeds. The finished seeds are smooth, oval-shaped, and free-flowing, with a clean appearance that remains stable during storage.

White Sesame Seeds display a soft ivory to light beige colour with a delicate, slightly glossy surface. Their small size allows for even distribution in recipes and formulations, while their mild, nut-like aroma makes them suitable for a wide range of culinary applications. The whole-seed format supports easy measuring, roasting, grinding, or direct use in food preparation.

Uses: White Sesame Seeds are widely used in baking, cooking, confectionery, and spice blends, including breads, crackers, pastries, sauces, salads, and dessert toppings. They are also commonly used for making tahini-style pastes, seed coatings, and culinary garnishes. Beyond food use, they may be incorporated into cosmetic formulations, bath products, and craft projects. The whole-seed format allows for roasting, grinding, or blending with other ingredients, offering versatility for both home kitchens and professional food preparation environments with consistent quality and visually uniform seeds.

Storage: Store in a cool, dry place in a sealed container.
