Botanical name: Maranta Arundinacea
Country of Origin: Thailand
Also Known As: Arrowroot Starch, Maranta Powder, Arrowroot Flour
Part Used: Rhizomes of Maranta arundinacea
Description: Arrow Root Powder is produced from the rhizomes of Maranta arundinacea, a tropical plant traditionally cultivated in the Caribbean, South America, and parts of Southeast Asia. The rhizomes contain a naturally fine, mild-tasting starch that becomes a soft, white powder once processed. The finished material is known for its smooth texture, neutral aroma, and clean appearance, making it a versatile ingredient in both culinary and craft applications.
Processing begins with harvesting the mature rhizomes, which are thoroughly washed to remove soil and natural debris. The cleaned rhizomes are then peeled and mechanically ground into a pulp to release the native starch. This pulp is repeatedly washed and strained to separate the starch granules from the fibrous plant material. The extracted starch is allowed to settle, after which excess water is removed. The remaining starch is then gently dried under controlled conditions to produce a fine, lightweight powder. Once fully dried, the arrowroot starch is milled and sieved to ensure a consistent particle size, resulting in a smooth, free-flowing powder.
Uses: Arrow Root Powder is widely used in culinary preparations as a thickening ingredient for soups, sauces, fillings, and desserts. Its neutral taste and fine texture make it suitable for baking, coating mixes, and powdered blends where a clean, smooth starch is desired. Beyond cooking, the powder is also used in cosmetic formulation and crafting projects, including dry shampoos, body powders, handcrafted cosmetics, and natural crafting mixtures. Its soft texture and absorbent nature make it a versatile plant-based starch for a range of creative and culinary uses.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container. Refrigeration not required.
